Developed to fulfill a USAAF need for a daytime fighter/escort fighter/dive-bomber, the F-86 first took flight on October 1st, 1947. The Sabre's distinctive swept-wing "flying tail" design and hydraulic flight-control system were among its many innovative features now common in jet aircraft. Equipped with six 50 caliber machine guns, the F-86 saw heavy action in the Korean War, often facing off against the MiG-15. A Sabre pilot had to be in visual range and within gun range of the enemy to attempt a shoot-down, making it the last true "dogfighter" in Air Force service.
