This holly has a dense, twiggy habit and makes an excellent hedge or border plant with an abundance of black berries in fall that persist through winter, accenting the glossy evergreen foliage. An excellent hedge or border plant that tolerates a variety of conditions, even warm humidity. Requires a male Inkberry for berry set. This great Holly is a versatile performer. As a native of Florida, it is adapted to the southern states. Its berries are a good choice for bird-friendly gardens. Plant as a divider between beds and borders or to enclose a space filled with seasonal color. This is perhaps the only true Holly to find a natural home in the tropics! Also surprisingly hardy to USDA Zone 3. Very adaptable, tolerating light or heavy, low to high moisture, neutral to slightly acidic soils. Water deeply, regularly in first few growing seasons to establish root system; reduce frequency once established. Fertilize before new growth begins in spring. May be pruned annually to shape or maintain smaller size. Gallberry honey is a highly-rated honey that results from bees feeding on inkberry flowers. This honey is locally produced in certain parts of the Southeastern U.S. in areas where beekeepers release bees from late April to early June to coincide with inkberry flowering time. Deer resistant. Inkberry is pest free, but it has a tendency to become leggy near the ground as it ages. However, it withstands heavy pruning and renewal of old plants is suggested. Also it is rhizomatous and can form large, expanding colonies unless root suckers are removed regularly.
