The Landing Vehicle, Tracked (LVT), an amphibious warfare vehicle and landing craft, was introduced by the US Navy. Used by various armies during WW2, it evolved from a cargo carrier to an assault troop and fire support vehicle, known as 'Amphtrack', 'Amtrak', 'Amtrac', and 'alligator' or 'gator'. Originating from a civilian rescue vehicle, the Alligator, developed by Donald Roebling in 1935, it was later militarized and adopted as the LVT. The LVT-1 could carry 18 men or 4,500 pounds of cargo, initially used for supply landings, but later recognized for its assault potential. The LVT(A)-2, an armored version, saw widespread use, with 18,616 units delivered by 1945, equipping US Army and Marine Corps battalions, and also used by British, Canadian, and Australian armies.
