Typically, during the summer the plant blossoms and showcases a vibrant array of pink, rose, and red hued flowers. However, when the winter sets in, the plant goes dormant and sheds its leaves.

The plant also prefers consistently warm temperatures, which is why it is grown as a houseplant in many parts of the United States (except USDA zones 11 and 12).
