The StuG.III, Germany's most produced armored fighting vehicle in WWII, was built on the Panzer III chassis, making it cheaper and quicker to manufacture due to its lack of a rotating turret. When encountering heavily armored Russian tanks, the StuG III Ausf.F was equipped with a longer 7.5cm gun, marking its shift from an infantry support vehicle to a tank destroyer. Produced between March and September 1942, 359 of these variants were made, with most featuring a 7.5cm StuK 40 L/43 gun, and the final 31 boasting a more powerful L/48 gun. These late-production models paved the way for the Ausf.F/8 replacement.
